After around 10 years working in the children’s party industry, I hosted my own child’s 1st birthday party a few weeks ago and I loved it.
Of course, the party had to have a theme and we went for Eric Carle, creator of the Hungry Caterpillar and Brown Bear Brown Bear. Neive has a few of his books and really enjoys them as well as a hungry caterpillar toy. Plus, the colours are bold and bright and I love his illustrations.
I really didn’t want to go OTT for the party and it all end up feeling like work so I kept it as simple as I could allow myself.
My party planning list looked like this:
- Local hall
- Fab balloons
- Sensory and soft play hire for the babies
- Thank you gifts
- Friends and family to celebrate with!
As always, I don’t go mad with themed tableware so I picked the few items (napkins and decorations) and then everything else was lovely and colourful.
I am in love with confetti balloons and these small letter balloons so of course had to use both at Neive’s party. The confetti balloons were easy to put together and inflate and went so well with the bright theme. I used glue dots to stick Neive’s name to the wall above the drinks table and had a giant number one that was moved around the room by the babies who loved the shiny balloon weight.
I purchased a box of 100 Eric Carle postcards online and made this back drop on two sheets of A2 card to go behind the cake table. I also used some of the books we own as props and The Hunger Caterpillar guarded the cupcakes.
I had a couple of the postcards enlarged and printed on A3 to use as signs for the party and made the thank you tags you will see a little later from them as well.
Cake & Sweets
Because most of the little guests were babies and the party was after lunch, we didn’t do any sit-down party food but went for all the yummies and little fresh fruit pots and fruit kebabs for guests to nibble on.
How fantastic is this cake my mum and her friend made, I’m no good at special cakes and my mum really came through for us with this creation. It’s a book cake with pages decorated in the theme of one of Eric Carle’s books, Mr Seahorse.
It says “As Mr Seahorse drifted gently through the sea the passed right by, Neive’s 1st Birthday Party”. It was a Chocolate mud cake that was amazing and my Husband made a little Neive model that is stood on some books at the back of the cake looking over. I had some icing discs printed to go on half the cupcakes my mum made and also found these cute butterflies in Waitrose for the other half. A true team effort.
Who doesn’t love a sugary treat! I added a few sweetie jars to the cake table with tongs and sweet bags so guests could help themselves through out the party and then take a bag home with them. These went down a storm with the children and adult guests alike.
We all sung happy birthday which Neve was delighted by and then tucked into the cake and sweets. Little guests all left with a party bag (filled with stickers, bubbles and toys) and baby guests had a bubble wand.
