DIY Floral Arrangements for Halloween

Flowers don’t just have to be about beauty, they can make a statement too and why not do this for your Halloween party! Add to your spooky scene by using frightful flowers and making alternative arrangements to compliment your haunting Halloween tableware.

DIY Twisted Tree

Why not create your own Halloween twisted tree, think scary spiders, cobwebs and treats all in one! – bring the outside in.  All you will need is a traditional pumpkin, or if you want to cheat our pumpkin shaped buckets will work too, some large twigs and fallen leaves;beech twigs work particularly well for this or willow/contorted hazel, dry florist foam, mossing pins and scissors.

  1. Carve out your pumpkin as you would normally and then place your florist foam inside.
  2. Create a tree like shape by pushing the twigs into the florist foam as you would normally do with flowers, cut off any unnecessary branches to shape your tree.
  3. Next take your leaves, oak and Horsechestnut work best, and pin these over your foam with the mossing pins to hide this from sight.
  4. Now you have your basic tree shape, drape multicoloured spider webs or a spider garland across the branches
  5. Using a needle and thread hang small packets of Halloween sweets and chocolates from your branches for passing trick or treaters.

DIY Ghoulish Garland

Not just for Christmas, garlands are a great way to add a focus to your room, draped over a banister, mantel piece or round a door frame, they create a huge impression.

All you will need is some water tubes for your flowers that can be purchased from florists or garden centres, binding and florist wire, old clippers and lots of foliage such as Red Robin and Red Oak, both amazing colours at this time of year, and evergreens such as Pine, Rosemary and Fir for the bulk of your garland as these are for longevity and texture.

Flowers such as black Dahlias, Chrysanthemums, Thistles and Protea can be teamed with Pinecones and Hypericum and are particularly striking and spooky looking to fit in with your Halloween theme. Now for the technical bit…..

  1. Start your garland by taking your binding wire and placing a handful of greenery, using predominately the evergreen, next to the wire and wrapping this around the bottom of your foliage, to secure it into place. Make sure that you do not cut the wire and ensure that it is kept straight at all times.
  2. Next take another handful of greenery and place this slightly lower, facing the same direction to the previous greenery against the wire and again wrap this with your binding wire to secure into place.
  3. Repeat this for as many times as you need to achieve the length you require. Once you are satisfied with this you can complete your garland by taking another handful of greenery and placing this at the end of your garland the opposite way, wrapping your binding wire again around the end of the greenery a number of times, this will allow you to then cut your wire without breaking the garland. Finish by covering up any exposed wires in additional foliage.
  4. Now for the fun bit and to make your garland look spook-tastic: take your flowers and cut the stems to the same length as the water tubes. Once in the tube you can use your florist wire again to attach to the garland by wrapping the wire around your tube and then into the garland, obviously being in the water will help your flowers not to wilt.  Space these evenly throughout your arrangement so you have a mixture of flowers and texture, you can then do the same with your other Autumnal foliage using wires again to attach to your garland. Any areas where you can see tubes or wire just cover with additional greenery following the same method.
  5. Wire in decorations such as creepy creatures and spider’s webs.
