The British tennis season is upon us, with the Wimbledon tournament finally under-way. Dust off your tennis whites and host a get-together complete with tennis-themed party games, smashing food and plenty of strawberries and cream, inspired by the All-England Club.
As well as all the gripping on-court action, Wimbledon fortnight is well-known for the mountains of strawberries and cream consumed there. Use these as inspiration for a smashing Wimbledon-themed party for all ages.
Wimbledon Tennis Party Decorations
If you’re feeling energetic, start the proceedings with your own mixed tennis tournament on the local courts, ensuring your guests adhere to the strict(!) dress code of whites. Send out green tennis-ball shaped invitation cards, or red strawberry-shaped ones. Weather permitting, deck out the garden with purple and green balloons and streamers, the traditional colours of the championships. String up a few lime paper lanterns at different heights to represent tennis balls. Make sure that Wimbledon is playing on the telly or radio in the background so no one misses the action…
Cover the party table with a green cloth, adding court lines with masking tape and securing with tablecloth clips so it doesn’t blow away. Dress the table with Union Jack plates, napkins, cups and cutlery to celebrate this very British event. If you have any old tennis balls which are no longer good for playing with, put these into vases to make tennis-themed centrepieces. Alternatively, stacks of bright green Granny Smith apples will work too. Serve sandwiches in portable trays and any hot party foods from handy cartons. For a kids party, food boxes are great, picnic style.
Wimbledon Tennis Party Food
It wouldn’t be a Wimbledon party without plenty of strawberries: serve these simply hulled and presented in pretty punnets, and cream. For a birthday or other special occasion, make a pavlova with chewy meringues and cream, a strawberry and elderflower cake, or a classic summer pudding. Provide berry ice-cream sundaes for a kid’s party, and a rectangular cake covered with green icing, decorated to look like a tennis court. Serve desserts in portable cardboard tubs – there may well be an important game on that they don’t want to miss…
If you’re hosting a tea-time event, the Truly Scrumptious party theme will make a great backdrop to your crustless cucumber sandwiches and pink lemonade. A glorious cream tea with warm scones, clotted cream and jam will be just the ticket.
Wimbledon Tennis Party Games
Outdoor activities might include a game or two with a soft tennis set – essential if you’re playing closer to your crowd than they do on Centre Court. String up a net using a piece of rope draped with a sheet and take it in turns to play a few games, and for a refreshing drink when it’s time to change ends, elderflower cordial is a sure-fire hit!
Hang up a pinata and let the kids each have a go at it with an old racquet. Hand out medals and prizes for party games, such as tennis socks, racquet grips and tennis balls for budding young Andy Murrays and Heather Watsons. Fill dark green party bags with bouncy balls, bubbles, a couple of strawberry laces and a packet of strawberry seeds to plant at home.
